Ober Gatlinburg, Mountains & Where Do I Eat Lunch?

I'm in Tennessee with my darling teen. We've slept in because we're catching up on the hours we've lost while caring for the Dowager Feline Clancy. Her sister feline, Mischief, is guarding Clancy while we are on our mini trip to Tennessee. And we have a wonderful neighbor and sister cat lover taking extra care of our feline.

Ah, sleep. A glorious thing I have missed.

But we can't spend our entire day locked in the Hilton. Much as I love the free Internet and the stolen writing time, I am here to see some sights and find the penultimate (I just wanted to use that word) place for a late lunch/early dinner.

After we spruce up, we're driving up to the Smoky Mountains. We'll battle other color seeking tourists, stop in Gatlinburg for lunch and more sight seeing, then head back to Knoxville to meet the man who made all this exploring possible.

So computer OFF. Shower now. Pictures later!

And if someone wants to look up the word penultimate for me and post the definition, even better. Once again I confess: I write by committee.

Ah, you're in my neck of the woods. I live in East Tennessee, just a hop, skip, and a jump to Gatlinburg. Ignore downtown and take 321 to the Arts & Crafts Community for pottery, woodwork, soaps, candles, fall decor, and more...all made locally.

Back on the strip, some good eats are Bubba Gump Shrimp, National Park Grill, and Calhoun's.

Of course, nothing beats a PB sandwich in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Have fun here in the Smokies!

Thanks Britt! We love Calhouns! Just ate dinner there last night. Ribs were delish but my favorite is the spinach maria--hands down a great comfort food. I'd forgotten about the fabulous arts and crafts community. Thanks for the reminder. We'll head over after we get some photos of the gorgeous mountains.

Hi Wendy: Thanks for stopping by -- I've got a bottle of champagne chilling for when your next adventure hits the shelves! Can't wait to see that book when it is published :-)

Hey, I hope you had a great time. I had to laugh because I was going to give you the correct definition of penultimate even before you asked. (You'd expect nothing less, right?)

It means: second to last. So if you were the penultimate finalist in a writing contest, you'd be 4th out of 5, or 9th out of 10...

A lot of people accidentally use it the way you did because it sounds like it should mean "super ultimate" or "premier". The truth is much less exciting, I know. =)

Ah Gwen, you are so amazing and awesome! Thanks for giving me the heads up for the definition of "penultimate." Oddly, the restaurant we chose was a chain restaurant that was definitely not number one on my list of go-to places. But we had a good time and enjoyed our day in the mountains.

So I should have written that I wanted to go to a "super ultimate" restaurant and then I would have avoided that silly ol' chain restaurant.
